The final element of Schuchart`s reorganization was prairielands Energy Marketing, which expanded the company`s energy product markets. In 1991, Prairielands signed a 17-year capacity contract with the Northern Border Pipeline. The agreement established a link between regional natural gas reserves and the main national markets. In 1992, Prairielands began using the natural gas futures market. In the early 1970s, the company developed its natural gas distribution system into two “Progress” projects. Progress `70 extended the pipelines 227 miles east through North Dakota and commissioned 12 new municipalities for $18.5 million. “Progress `72” extended the gas system northward to the U.S. Army`s Peripheral Acquisition Radar (PAR) near Cavalier, North Dakota, and led to gas service for five North Dakota municipalities. Montana-Dakota crews worked all night for the next two weeks to restore service to the Black Hills and rebuild much of the destroyed gas transportation system. By the beginning of the new millennium, MDU had reduced its focus on its procurement activities.
In 2000, procurement services accounted for less than 10% of turnover. Growth in other sectors, driven largely by acquisitions (70 between 1993 and 2001), was more disciplined than unforeseen: it bought only in closely related areas or companies, and the strategy seemed very effective. The company`s turnover, which was $464 million in 1995, reached $1.9 billion in 2000. As the nation prepared for war, many Mondakonians, as Montana-Dakota employees called themselves, joined, enlisted, or left the area. By June 1942, nearly 10 percent of the company`s pre-war personnel were on duty. During the war itself, shortages of labor and equipment made repairs more difficult and expansion almost impossible. After the war, Montana-Dakota developed and took its current form. MDU founded Utility Services, Inc. in 1997 and has contributed to its growing diversity.
